Public Speaking: Then To Now

In review of my recorded speeches, I have definatly seen improvement. In the beginning, i noticed low volume, no eye contact, no hand gestures and poor posture. Now I've seen that i have improved on all those in reference to my last speech. The only thing that I noticed wrong with my last speech was that i didn't have a powerpoint to back me up. That was the first real speech I think I have done without one. With the pillow of a powerpoint, I think I did well and had a great conclusion.

How To Speech

In my recent how too speech I feel that I presented my information better this time around. I had payed more attention to my audience and directed them through drawing. Also I wasn't very anxious, that might have to do with the fact that Mr. Lunn had taken time to actually show us emotion, enthusiasim and voice projection. That had helped greatly because not only did it somewhat bring the classroom into more of a fun, relaxed setting but it also instilled confidence in myself and I'm sure others.

In my how to speech the things i had trouble with didn't really phase me. It could have either been the fact that I'm a seinor and its the end of the year, or the fact that given the choice of topic was something so familiar made it easy to actually be enthusiastic about giving a speech. Still I felt crunched for time considering I didn't have much time to do it. Lastly the thing that gets on my nerves the most about giving speeches is the sure fact that, you're in the spotlight, everything you end up doing is judged and it makes me nervious and there's nothing i can really do about it. Mr. Lunn had said that when he first started teaching, he was so nervious about what the students would thing of him, until ultimatly he didn't care what they thought. I see this as a really strong point and i personally don't care what my classmates think of me because after 3 weeks I'll probably never see anyone in this classroom again.

Informative Speech Review

In my speech, I had noticed that when watching myself I had seen that in fact, I had seen myself using few hand gestures, speaking clearly even though it was a bit raspy, and I kept coughing, which was a bit distracting, but I had bonchitis and i think i delt well with it. All in all my speech was way too detailed and long, and i could have focused in on the main points more. Speeches are not really something I've done in english classes since about sophomore year, so Im happy they were incorporated into this year so that I can eventually get better at them.

Definitions

An exaggeration is when someone says "That guy was a big as a house" or "His brains the size of a peanut".

An oxymoron is when something said or done contradicts itself like "jumbo shrimp" or "new classic".

Sarcasm is when someone says something but means either the opposite or something different like when someone tries to make a joke and you reply, "that's hilarious!"

A wit is kind of like a smart remark that makes fun of someone in order to change then just like with John Wilkes when he was told by a constituent that he would rather vote for the devil, Wilkes responded: "Naturally." He then added: "And if your friend decides against standing, can I count on your vote?".
